I hope this isn’t sarcasm, because it isn’t funny. If you are serious, please ask find someone to talk to. If you don’t have anyone to talk to, you have all of “us”.

I'm sorry, it's not sarcasm. But I don't think it was appropriate to say. I don't think that talking can help me. I feel like I died around 2 years ago and now I'm just going about day to day things in a way that people don't get upset with me, but every day I feel more and more checked out of reality.

Talking may not feel helpful but I think if you try it and are open to the thoughts and suggestions shared by others it could help.

I had a period of my life about 12 years ago (I was 39/40 years old) where I felt similar to you. Everything I did and had in my life seemed pointless and I felt like I was just waiting around to see it all inevitably crash and burn. When I went in public all I saw was a mass of people I felt completely disconnected from and wondered what problems and fears they were hiding. Panic attacks, difficulty getting out of bed. After a long mental struggle with myself assuming that the way I felt couldn’t be fixed I went to the doctor and started therapy. Aside from treatment for depression, it turned out that due to stress my testosterone had crashed and was below 100 (600-800) is normal.

What you are feeling is a chemically induced state we interpret as feelings. Please don’t assume that feeling can’t be changed. With a bit of perspective and chemical correction you will be amazed how much better things can be and you can find your purpose and drive again. It will take time and it will take work, but it is worth it. Don’t let your brain lead you astray, it can play tricks on you and of course, it all feels real.

Are there symptoms of low testosterone in men?

I wonder if its more common than we realize.

Hey, been in this situation and went out of it at some point. Some medicine, some mental work to make things better. You can make it work for you if you try.

I believe that some of the genius of the show has to go to Dan Lyons as well. He worked at HubSpot for a stint and wrote a book about it called "Disrupted" (https://www.amazon.com/Disrupted-My-Misadventure-Start-Up-Bu...). Really funny, in a sad way.

I read through this book in a few hours and really couldn't put it down

He's got another one out now, "Lab Rats", on how open offices and other trends are making office work miserable. (Not sure there's much on how unpredictable scheduling of retail workers is making their lives even more miserable, but some of the motives of management are at least broadly similar...)

Yes, Dan Lyons is hilarious. He had written a book about Jobs called "Options" that was really excellent, and of course he was the author of the Fake Steve Jobs blog.

I'm not sure he has a great personality, and went offtrack during the Linux/IBM/SCO fiasco, but man is he funny.

He'll always be Fake Steve Jobs to me.

His row with TechCrunch's MG Siegler provided some decent entertainment too.

I have been there and crashed and burned in the process. Two things that have completely changed my perspective that I suggest is reading two books, "The Secret of Letting Go" by Guy Finley and "The 28 Laws of Attraction" by Thomas Leonard. You have to make a mental shift and let go of the baggage that you feel is forcing you to do things you resent.

My lurking on HN is one of the best sources of information I have. Thanks to all of you for making me more rounded and better informed.

Cheers!
