As a parent, I completely agree. We need to protect children from the dangers of the completely uncontrolled "jungle" of social media. But above all, we need to give children back the right to experience a true, real childhood, made up of true friends, fresh air, friendships, and real relationships!

I'm not in favor of these social media bans, but I would think the benefit here is that without the ban your child will be in the "real world" while everybody else's is on social media. This would make the "real world" socialization benefits more difficult.

I want my child to go out, but first I need to force every other child to go out. Maybe that's why children are not out? Because parents wait for all the other children to go out?

I mean, we view social networks as having network effects that keep people there. The same force that stops people from switching from Facebook and TikTok prevents people from abandoning social media altogether. Waiting for all the adults to be responsible and forward thinking seems a little far fetched.

So instead you are going to use the force of the state to tell them what they should do instead and then threaten them with violence/fines/jail time if they don't want to?

Enormous, unrelenting social pressure? A crying child telling you that they're completely cut off from their peers and social group? Day after day of arguments and pleading? Schools and scout groups and extra-curriculars that tacitly require your child to have a Facebook or WhatsApp account? And much much more!

I know plenty of people with teen and younger kids who give access to a computer, but it's only at home. When at school or whatever else, there's only a dumbphone. I think this strikes a nice balance.

If the above are representative, then what I believe you've overlooked here is a the much more difficult issue:

Parents have power over children, at least up to a point, and many platforms provide help with exercising that power. Apple and Google provide some means to restrict social media access which place control in the hands of parents.

Parents do not, normally, have power over other people's children. Parents can influence in-person social circles, somewhat, but without withdrawing children from all situations where they interact with other children, including school, social media's influence upon a parent's children is still very strong via the indirect route.

When a child goes to school, attends a group activity outside of school, or socialises in real life with friends outside of school, there are always children in the groups they meet who either use social media themselves or have older siblings, friends or parents who use social media themselves and who influence those children themselves.

To be clear, I'm not giving any opinion about what's proposed here by the UK government. I wanted only to object to what looks like an oversimplification that makes a false assumption that parents have a level of control and influence that they really don't.


To add a data point, my kids are not allowed on any social media and don't have phones. (They have iPads, but they are locked down and blocked at home anyway)

But that doesn't stop them seeing things on social media - when they are at the park, there are always peers there that have a phone and showing TikTok videos or Facebook reels etc, so even though I, as a parent, have blocked it at home, and chosen to not give them a smart phone, they are still exposed to it outside of that.

(And to be be fair, the same happens to me in a way. I don't have any social media logins, but I still get sent links for Instagram/FB/TikTok from friends, or my wife will show me something she's seen there, so it seems there really isn't much escape from it!)


My conflation of social media and smartphones comes from reports of ICT skills declining in children due to overuse of smartphones and tablets to interact with technology. I used this as a decent proxy for the main means kids will interact with social media.

I understand parents' concerns, though I think the price in terms of civic liberties we pay for these social media bans is too high.

I think we should ban cigarettes and alcohol for children, but we should also allow adults to make the decision to consume them rather than preventing them from doing so. We also should not ban unrelated products that happen to be bought from the same store.

BTW, it's worth noting that, in the UK, parents are legally allowed to give their children alcohol, at home, from the age of 5.

Controversial, but I think that giving to everyone a computer connected to the internet - be it PDA-sized or any other form - was a mistake, and everything happened so fast that no one could control what was going on.

I say it was a mistake because for the generation grown with BBS and 14.4k modems the dangers of an open network were evident and real from the start, even if at the time they were minuscule in comparison to now. Those born with an always on, always connected device already in their hands lacked this awareness from the start.

Yes indeed. When I learned SQL in college, the professor made a HUGE deal about how it was a "4th generation language" so it was so abstract you didn't have to think about how the computer would answer your query.

And this I think is best not done in SQL/ the relational-data paradigm. It's better to understand the problem in terms that do not tie you in to a specific technology. And once you have a clear picture of what need to be built, then choose persistence tech; if that happens to be SQL, you can then translate your solution to SQL.

In my experience, SQL sorely misses sum-types. So I need to find a way to serialize the sum-types of my domain model to SQL.

I understand the point you're trying to make, and yes, it does seem like SQL is "low-level" from the perspective a wrapper like ORMs or a GUI db browser tool with menus for filtering data.

But it's also worth remembering that SQL itself is a high-level wrapper that hides the lower-level C/C++ code of the db engine that has the loops that iterate through b-trees, 8k data pages, memory blocks of the buffer cache, etc.

And C/C++ itself is a high-level wrapper that hides the logic in lower-level Linux o/s system calls that manages RAM and disk i/o.

And Linux itself is a high-level wrapper that hides low-level device drivers like SATA/SSD memory-mapped IO ... and so on and so on.

Depending on the type of app, you can ignore all the lower levels and just work at the abstraction level of higher-level wrappers.

Prolog teaches logical constraint based thinking.

ML/Lisp/etc teach functional thinking.

There is a lot of use in learning these other things beyond the standard imperative thinking from C/Python/Java/etc. Since some problems reduce their complexity significantly in one form or another.

To a first approximation, yes. But 'client-side joins' can be a valuable tool when the database engine won't cooperate. For some queries and some engines, you can do a select with a join to get everything you need in one query, but a select to get a list of ids followed by a union of selects (not an IN query) to get details for each id will have the results at the client sooner, with less load on the database, at some potential loss of consistency. Your client needs to be within a reasonable round trip of the server or the two queries approach won't get the answer faster.


I'm not sure I follow. Fetching the data in one query should almost always be faster and more efficient - the same work is being done regardless, except now you have the additional overhead involved with a second query (network and connection overhead, parsing etc.)

Depends on how the database engine sets up the join. I've seen queries where the join ends up spilling into a temp table and it takes a lot longer to do it that way. IIRC, this can happen especially if you've asked the database engine to sort things.

Same with UNION vs IN. If you union 10 queries for one row each by id, it'll hit the index every time; but if you do it with IN, maybe it decides to do an index scan which takes longer.

You could say well the database engine is broken if client-side join works better than database-side join, and sure it probably is, but given the choice of fix the database engine or do a client-side join, I know which one is feasible in the short term.

Every major database uses nested loop, hash, or sort-merge joins. If the data is small enough to fetch in a second query, I don't see any scenario where it would make a query spill to disk when it otherwise wouldn't have (except those pesky OR's).

Most JOIN issues can be resolved by composing using sub-queries/CTE's to defer a join to a smaller intermediary result, and the only time this generally can't be done is if you need a predicate on the joined table.

I've only found this to be true when there's an OR condition where the single query ends up doing a bitmap against every row, in which case a UNION will be faster since it's just appending two already-index-ordered streams.

In that case, I'd suggest using EXPLAIN on your query and CREATE INDEX on whatever requires full table scans.

Worst case, you could CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW whatever would've happened in that temp table.

At the end of the day, your single query will be faster.

Well that's because decades of bitter experience has told us all that object graphs rarely map cleanly to sets of relationships.

However, I do think that must have been the original idea as tools such as Hibernate tried so hard to obscure the underlying SQL and database. As a result all Hibernate objects have their own particular identity requirements which only made sense to a developer that knows what's going on under the hood.

Yes, LLMs overuse that pattern. But it's a valid rhetorical device used for many , many years by human authors. Quite often too, especially in philosophical writing, and fantasy novels.

I'll give you that it wasn't often used in blogs or tech articles, but LLMs have been around long enough to have influenced human writing in other domains without the entirety of the content itself being LLM generated.

But its called out so often I swear people online will go read some classics and accuse them of being AI generated.

Let's not forget that Waymo requires an extensive, custom mapping and software/pre-training development process for every new city they operate in, are only in 10 cities total after over 20 years, and are still nowhere near profitability (or even with a clear plan to get there as far as I can tell).

I personally believe widely available self-driving cars which don't operate at a loss will continue to elude us until we accept the tradeoffs of dedicated lanes, a standardized vehicle-to-vehicle communication protocol, and roadside sensors. We were lied to.


For a fraction of the cost of developing self-driving cars we could have self-driving trains/trams/subways and most likely minibuses as part of public transportation networks.

And self-driving minibuses would basically provide 95% of the benefits of self-driving buses. They could offer 24/7 frequent service with huge coverage, we already have dedicated bus lanes in many places (and we could scale dedicated bus lanes much faster than dedicated self-driving car lanes), etc.

Now, I understand that in many places (especially the US) this is infeasible because public anything = communism.


Folks in the US are happy to spend tax dollars on roads, it's just that mass transit spending is considered communism.

To be fair to the anti-train crowd, we've been led so far down this disastrous path of car-led sprawl that the hope of even building feasible buses that can reach into the byzantine suburbs is unlikely.

So, maybe our best hope is self-driving EVs? At least in our lifetimes.
