OS X isn't even really FreeBSD, parts of it are based on FreeBSD (but the kernel isn't).

That's not exactly true. xnu/bsd/kern, the "Unix half" of the kernel, is FreeBSD. xnu/osfmk, the "Mach half", isn't.
