I love opinionated esthetics like this. They're like schools of thought. Back when I did user interface design and technical writing, I would sometimes consider black design elements, like doing the squint test to see how headings balanced body text.
FWIW, physically printing black can be very interesting. "Rich black" includes the other colorants (cyan, magenta, yellow). IIRC double black is having more than one (lithographic) plate with black. Really subtle stuff that you don't notice until something seems wrong.
