Apple is a member of the MPEG-LA patent pool, and receives a cut of the H.265 royalties. They support AV-1 only reluctantly, likely due to pressure from content providers like Netflix and YouTube.


That is interesting! I'd always been confused WHY Apple with its focus on audio / video wasn't pushing more here for some better open standards.

The AV1 support is obviously a step though in the right direction.


Ah, so that might be why they stubbornly refuse to support VP9 on iPhones.
