Makers today are what hackers used to be before criminals took over the term. I wholly welcome the change. It's nice to have a word that embodies all of the good stuff from hacker culture but leaves the baggage far behind.
For me, the word "maker" embodies some kind of wannabe hacker culture (much like the "rock star programmer" crowd). Somehow in most people that label themselves "maker" I see more of self-marketing than actual technical know how.
