You can't get that MAC address without first talking to the hardware. Chicken and egg.


Well, udev does set the device identifier based on the MAC. Yes, it talks to the hardware first, no that's not a problem.

(Although I still prefer the old rules of setting PCI and PCIe identifiers based on address. It's only for USB that it does not work.)


Shine a light through the egg to see which chicken it is before you hatch it.

Uh I mean it's a solvable problem, even if they didn't solve it.
